What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil, or sildenafil citrate, is the active ingredient found in Viagra. Since 2013, Viagra is available as a generic medication. These contain the same active ingredient as Viagra and offers the same effectiveness, strength and quality, all at a lower price.
How does it work?
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by increasing the blood flow to the penis. This is turn helps you get or maintain an erection when sexual stimulation occurs.
Sildenafil should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before intercourse with or without food. However, the onset of action can be delayed on a full stomach. It is recommended to start with the 50mg tablet if you have no other conditions. You can then either increase or decrease the dosage according to your response. Do not take more than one pill in 24 hours.
Like with all medications, sildenafil can cause side effects. The most common include:
- A runny or stuffy nose
- Back pain
In some rare circumstances, sildenafil can cause severe side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using sildenafil and contact your healthcare provider immediately:
- A sudden loss of vision or hearing
- An erection that’s painful and lasts for more than 4 hours
- Chest pain after taking sildenafil at the onset of sexual activity
In extreme cases, sildenafil can cause heart attacks in people with prior heart conditions.
Can I drink alcohol?
High consumption of alcohol can make it more difficult to get an erection. Avoid drinking heavily before taking sildenafil to get the best effect.
Precautions before taking treatment
Please make sure that your doctor and pharmacist are aware of any medication you are taking as well as any allergies or health issues you may have.
If you take any medicines called nitrates, often prescribed for chest pain or stimulators for pulmonary hypertension, your blood pressure could drop to an unsafe level.
You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to any of the ingredients found in the tablet. This can be found in the patient information leaflet included in the packaging.
Do not take sildenafil if you are using any other type of erectile dysfunction (ED) medication as it can lead to serious complications.
What is Tadalafil (Generic Cialis)?
Cialis is a well-considered drug, known for its ability to help men achieve and maintain erections; regardless of previous erectile dysfunction issues. Combining Tadalafil with sexual stimulation will increase the blood flow to the penis in order to help a man obtain (and sustain) a longer lasting erection.
How does it work?
Cialis contains Tadalafil which is medically known as a PDE5 inhibitor. Tadalafil inhibits the PDE5 enzyme which in turn allows for various process to help relax the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for greater blood flow to the penis. This makes it easier to achieve and sustain a fuller, firmer erection during intercourse. As with all Erectile Dysfunction (ED) medication, sexual stimulation is required for it to work.
What are the benefits?
One of the benefits of Cialis over other ED drugs is that it is known to work very quickly. It can be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity.
The duration of effect is much longer when compared to other ED drugs. In fact, it has been proven to work for up to 36 hours after taking the drug, hence being termed as “The Weekend Pill”. The effect is seen only when sexually aroused and therefore does not mean that an erection will be maintained continuously for the full 36 hours.
A benefit of Tadalafil when using the daily dosage (2.5mg or 5mg daily), is that it can be used by all men, including those who suffer from medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
Additionally, as with all ED medication, Cialis has the ability to potentially enhance your relationships and sex life, even if you suffer from impotence or inability to achieve an erection.
Dosage and Available Strengths
2.5mg (daily dosage)
Cialis 2.5mg is the lowest dose available. It’s intended for daily use (take at the same time every day and never more than once a day), so it might be better for men who have sex two or more times a week. This is also good for first time users before the need to increase the dose.
5mg (daily dosage)
Similar to the 2.5mg tablets, the 5mg tablet can be taken as a daily dose. Men are advised to take the tablet at the same time each day and it should help them achieve an erection once sexually aroused. Apart from improving sexual performance, the daily dose offers more freedom and spontaneity in the bedroom with longer-lasting erections. Planning sex by taking it 30-60 minutes beforehand is not required, as is the case with the other ED treatments.
10mg & 20mg (to be taken before anticipated sexual activity)
One tablet at least 30 minutes before sex is required. No more than one tablet should be taken per day.
The usual starting dose is 10mg. The dose can be increased or decreased, depending on how well it works and how often it is needed to be taken.
The effects may last longer than 24 hours, so it’s not recommended to take the 10mg or 20mg tablets every day.
For the tablets to be effective, sexual excitement/arousal is needed.
What are the side effects?
Cialis can cause various side effects, like every type of drug; ranging from less worrying common effects to severe uncommon side effects. In the latter case, a doctor should be contacted immediately.
Common side effects can include, flushing, headaches, nasal congestion. Uncommon side effects can be chest pain, fatigue, swelling in the feet or palpitations.
When not to take Tadalafil?
You should not take Tadalafil (generic Cialis) when taking other ED drugs such as Sildenafil (generic Viagra), Vardenafil (generic Levitra), or Avanafil (generic Spedra).
You should also not take Tadalafil when taking medications to treat HIV, including Indinavir and Ritonavir and taking alpha-blockers often used in the treatment of prostate enlargement and high blood pressure such as Doxazosin, Prazosin, Alfuzosin, Terazosin, Indoramin and Tamsulosin.
